My house is right next to the tree house so it makes it way too easy for little feet to get on my roof. The first time I heard little feet scampering across my roof I thought, "damn, that's big squirrel!" Running outside I looked up and locked eyes with Shep, the 5 year old. He just froze, like a squirrel. Being the college education woman that I am, he didn't fool me for a second! "Shep! What are you doing?" He remained frozen. "Shep, I see you!" I was beginning to wonder if he actually thought he was convincing me that he was a squirrel. When he finally broke character he explained that he was collecting his Nerf bullets. I gently explained to him that he could fall off the roof and snap his neck in two. He wasn't phased. They have a zip line for heck sake. They're fearless. The baby is the most fearless of all. I watched him build a fire last week.
When the weather is nice, we will all ride our bikes to church. I like to pretend we're the Von Trapp family singing down Fulton street as we dodge potholes and hungover college kids. It's exactly like Austria if you don't think about how it isn't like Austria at all. Because their dad, Josh works at the church, it's usually their mom, Natalie and I getting all the kids there. I'm always in the front, then the three boys with Natalie pulling up the rear with the baby in the bucket seat and the 4 year old riding on her head or the handlebars. My job is to make sure no one gets hit by a car. Natalie's job is to make sure no one gets distracted by a butterfly and takes a hard right never to be seen from again. And yes, that includes me.
I love our tiny house and we've made so many wonderful memories here. Evan says he wants to stay here forever. I would like my own room again one day and have tried to explain to him that he too will want his own room one day soon. Until then, I smile when he leans over the loft to share something funny at night.
It's been an interesting and fun few years and I'm excited about writing again. From being on Match to somehow not getting fired from my largely administrative job, a few good stories will hopefully emerge. My life is so blessed. God is good. It's nice to be back.
